Daniel (Lin-Kit) Wong

Hello! I'm Daniel. I am doing a Ph.D. in the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon.
I am advised by Professor Greg Ganger and am a member of the Parallel Data Laboratory.

I am a systems builder and hacker who is interested in the design of scalable and secure distributed systems.

Feb ‘18: I'm looking for internships and collaborations with industry researchers. My résumé.

Research at CMU
  • Mainstream: Dynamic Stem-Sharing for Multi-Tenant Video Processing. [SysML ‘18 abstract]

With fellow student Angela Jiang, Professors Greg Ganger and Dave Andersen, and awesome collaborators Michael Kozuch, Padmanabhan Pillai, and Michael Kaminsky from Intel Labs.

A few highlights from my past activities:
  • Scalable distributed systems: internships at
    • Dropbox Vacuuming team: rebuilt their petabyte scale garbage collection system.
    • Facebook Core Data team: fixed a cross-region cache coherency problem.
  • Systems security: Final year project with Robert Watson at Cambridge on the compartmentalisation of cryptographic components (i.e., OpenSSL) (or, avoiding future Heartbleeds with Capsicum.)
  • Deep learning: dabbled in deep reinforcement learning, neural architecture generation, hyperparameter optimization, and optimizer design research at IHPC, A*STAR.
  • Clustering/Bioinformatics: published graph clustering research with Li Xiao-Li and Ng See-Kiong at I2R, A*STAR.
  • Sensor systems: neighbor discovery for sensor networks with Ben Leong at NUS.
  • International Olympiad in Informatics medallist (my 2016 note on where S'pore's IOI members are now).
  • More details on my projects here (my résumé is more up to date.)

I'm a tinkerer at heart, and am always on the lookout for novel challenges to work on. In seeking opportunities, I aim to optimise for learning and to do meaningful, impactful work.

I'm a software engineer and have a relentless urge to automate and optimize my process. Code quality and automation (including but not limited to development, deployment, and testing) are a priority for me.

I enjoy gliding, ice skating, scuba diving, long scenic drives (and walks), waterfalls and good sushi. I did my undergraduate studies at the University of Cambridge and am a member of Churchill College. I grew up in Singapore, am a 华中子弟, and am a proud alumnus of EC3 (where I was taught how to code and learnt to hack stuff together.)

It's PhD admit season — feel free to ping me if you're an admit and want to chat about working with Greg (and more general CMU stuff too!)
